Santa in a new place

Merry Christmas all!

This post is courtesy of my 9 year old nephew.

Apparently, Santa sometimes needs a little help with all his going to new houses and such.

Birds, beer, bunnies….and sharks!

THIS IS THE FIRST OF A NUMBER OF POSTS THAT WILL BE OUT OF ORDER. ENJOY THE STORIES. DON'T HATE ON THE LACK OF CHRONOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION.

This post goes all the way back to February 10th. This was the day that 15 good friends and I decided to take a trip up to Tahoe for some skiing. The trip had been planned for months and, luckily, WA had offered up use of his condo in Incline Village. After picking up Whit and other LA refugees, we were on our way up the mountain. MIA performed well in the snow. I think she was hungry for true AWD driving.

Saturday we woke up fearful that the dry season would lead to wet, bad skiing. The decision was quickly made to go to the highest ski resort in the area, Mt. Rose. We were rewarded with high winds, blowing snow and open trails. After a wonderful morning of lessons, yours truly took off on some runs down the mountain itself. In only my second time skiing EVER I succeeded in finishing up 7 runs that day and not having any catastrophic wipeouts. WA did my final two runs with me and described my progress as “awesome.” Later that night we found out that people who had spent that day at resorts that were at lower elevations had gotten rained on and generally experienced crappy days. Overall, we were happy that we had braved the winds and skied Rose.

That night, we all partied hardy with 6 bottles of wine at dinner and gambling at the Hyatt casino. Highlights of the night included taking over a craps table, AS and I going up to random people and cheering them on in their gambling endeavors and WA taking some loudmouthed chump for about $400 in Texas Hold ‘Em.

Sunday morning, we shook off hangovers and WA and I were on the mountain by 9:30AM. I was excited to try out my newfound ski skills and WA wanted to get a few more runs in. We decided to go back to Mt Rose due to its elevation and previous night’s snowfall while other people wanted to go to some of the mega resorts a little lower. Well, WA and I were rewarded once again with a BEAUTIFUL bluebird* ski day and powder everywhere. For someone who has never really skied in powder before, I had a blast. There is nothing like hitting a turn on a run and having snow fly up in your face. I shook off the hangover and even managed some of the longer runs at the resort. All and all, WA and I had an excellent day.

So, now I have the bug. I am sure that I won’t become a total ski bum seeing as how the startup and maintenance costs of skiing are so high. However, next time someone wants to go up to the mountains, I’m game.

*A bluebird ski day is when the sun comes out, the wind dies down and the powder is deep. Typically, this happens after a big storm.
